What is Art Therapy?
Art therapy is a unique form of psychotherapy that blends psychology and creativity.
Instead of focusing only on talking, art therapy gives folks the opportunity to express thoughts and emotions through painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, or other creative tools.
If you’ve ever felt like you couldn’t find the words to describe how you’re feeling— art therapy might be for you.
Why Art Therapy?
Emotions aren’t always easy to explain. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, trauma, depression, or grief, sometimes it's hard to talk about it directly.
Art therapy creates space for healing in a different way. Through images, colours, and symbols, you can explore what’s happening inside — without needing to say it all out loud.
Even simple drawings or colour choices can uncover hidden emotions or insights. Art therapy can help you:
• Feel more connected to yourself.
• Release stress in a safe, contained way.
• Understand your emotional patterns and triggers.
• Heal from painful experiences.
• Develop new tools for communication and growth.
You don’t need to be “good” at art for this to work. That’s one of the biggest myths. The focus isn’t on how your art looks—it’s about what it means to you.
Who Can Benefit?
Art therapy is often used to support people who are:
• Struggling to express themselves verbally.
• Recovering from trauma, grief, or major life changes.
• Managing anxiety, depression, or emotional regulation.
• Interested in creativity and curious about new ways to heal.
It’s also a great fit for people who feel overwhelmed or burnt out. Art therapy slows things down.
It creates a calming space for reflection and gentle insight.
What Happens In a Session?
In a session, you’ll work one-on-one with a trained art therapist.
At Feelings First, our art therapist Hailey offers a warm and welcoming environment. You might begin by talking briefly about how you’re feeling and then move into a creative exercise based on your goals. Afterwards, you’ll have time to reflect on the piece and talk about what came up for you.
Every session is tailored to your needs and comfort level. Whether you want to focus on managing emotions, processing grief, or simply learning to express yourself more clearly, your art therapist will guide you.
